Hello, I was just wondering if any of you have delt with alchoholism, personally, in family life or as a community. I"m not trying to dreg up horrible feelings. Here in the states a lot of the Alchoholic resources are very Christian/Monothiastic based. This makes it very hard for Heathens, and any other Pagans, to find help that isn't preachy. Aside from all the political issues that come from this, I was interested in the situations/support structures that other Heathens have had in dealing with these kinds of issues.

A guy called Uncle Thor does addiction recovery material aimed at Heathens and other Pagans. I ordered them to help with eating problems and have found them worthwhile reading - I think they are the only materials available of their kind. The author was himself an alcoholic IIRC, and has helped others subsequently to overcome their problems - his approach is to the point, practical and honest, which I think is very helpful.
Edit - Oh, I should point out that I do have experience dealing with an alcoholic family member and the chaos and suffering the disease can cause - my sister sadly died in 2007 aged 28, of liver failure related to chronic alcohol abuse. I believe she had an underlying emotional disorder which prompted her to seek comfort in alcohol, drugs and binge eating - I think we need to be more aware of these underlying issues and the treatments that are available to help individuals cope better with intense emotions. This was the crux of her problems IMO, of which the alcohol abuse was just a symptom.

Hail Molina
All i can suggest apart from the above is maybe contacting the Troth. They are fairly large and have knidreds all over the US.
I also agree with Gemyndig, this is usually an idicator of underlying problems. I have had issues with alcohol during my years, and sometimes i slip back, but now it's usually just excess on nights out, rather than disappearing for two or three days, this comes from underlying issues,so it's usually the case of an escape.
I hope you get the help your looking for, for whoever is going thru this bad time. Let us know if you do find someone to help.
In Frith
