Hi Folks, do you think that the carbon emission schemes that are available,to help us off set,are any good,or do you think we should do more? Is time running out,or not? I will be interested in hearing your views on this. Maggie.

I'm not too sure of what schemes are around right now, but the whole off-setting idea doesnt seem the best to me. Instead of off-setting how bouts trying to become as neutral as we can.
This is a very sore subject with me as on a daily basis i almost loose my temper at the latest dumb green idea from labour.

Maggie - is this the article or idea you are referring to? environment.newscientist.com/article/dn10985-new-uk-standards-for-offsetting-carbon-emissions.html I think this is a terrible policy that protects businesses from taking responsilbity for their actions and impacts to the global commons. This could be an interim measure that runs in parallel with increasingly stringent air quality standards. Businesses would then have some leeway in adapting to the new standards before they become obligatory and the off-setting mechanism is disengaged (or reset for a new, lower air quality standard). On the other hand, the government has to be careful about setting standards. They cannot be too low or else businsses will leave the UK and go to more pollution friendly countries. This happened in California in the 1990s. My dad was an air quality consultant for years and then suddenly was out of work because all of the major companies went east. With this off-setting policy - environmentalists could try to work the system... by buying credits themselves. Anyway, no idea on the actual politics, just a rambling thought on the policy theory.

Businesses are only about more more more all the time as far as I can see and have no interest in the people that they dominate as long as they get their money. They don't really care about global warming as far as I can see.
The current British government could make it policy to encourage more people to use diesel instead of petrol which produces less carbon emmissions, but they can tax more for petrol so they don't change. I remember hearing about someone who had a father who was a politician who said "If we told the truth we would never get into power". But I can see your argument about potential moving businesses taking away the money. Tough problem!
